UK Warship Arrives in Lagos to Combat Maritime Crime

By  Milcah  TTanimu

On Sunday, the UK Royal Navy warship, HMS Trent, docked in Lagos to bolster Nigeria’s efforts in combating maritime crimes. The Royal Navy’s mission involves providing capacity training and maritime support to address issues like sea piracy and illegal trafficking.

Commander Tim Langford, the commanding officer of HMS Trent, emphasized that this visit represents an opportunity for the UK Navy to collaborate closely with their Nigerian counterparts. He highlighted the long-standing history of engagement between the Royal Navy and the region, as well as the enduring partnership with the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Langford stated, “This is an opportunity for the Royal Navy and the Nigerian Navy to work together to identify potential solutions in the maritime environment and address insecurity on the high seas. We aim to learn from the experiences of all nations and share these lessons.”

Jonny Baxter, the UK Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, emphasized the importance of a secure maritime environment in promoting trade, investments, and prosperity between the two countries. He underlined Nigeria’s significance as a defense partner for the UK in West Africa and expressed the joint commitment to countering shared threats and enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.

Notably, HMS Trent previously visited Lagos in 2021, where it conducted maritime security patrols and provided support to partner navies in West Africa.
