The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Tanko Ishaya, has confirmed that two students of the institution were killed during recent unrest in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Speaking at a news conference in Jos, Ishaya said four other students and one staff member were injured and are currently receiving treatment.
He identified the deceased as Abel Gershon, a 300-level student in the Department of Building, and Adeyomo Temitope, a 500-level student in the Department of Quantity Surveying.
According to the vice-chancellor, Gershon sustained gunshot injuries on March 29 and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Jos University Teaching Hospital, where he later died. Temitope was reportedly attacked along Bauchi Road on April 1 while off campus.
The incident followed violence in the Angwan Rukuba area, which hosts many students and staff of the university. Authorities had earlier imposed a curfew after the attack, with tensions persisting in surrounding communities.
Ishaya expressed condolences to the families of the victims and said those injured were responding to treatment. He added that the university’s April 13 resumption date remains unchanged, noting that security has been reinforced within campuses and nearby communities.
He urged parents and guardians to allow students return to complete first-semester examinations and begin the next academic session.
