The University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, noted for its commitment to national development and security has made history as the first Nigerian University to hold the first public lecture on the protection and preservation of national assets with the theme, “The Role of the Masses in Protecting Public Assets.
The events which is to be held in honour of Dr. Audi Abubakar fni, the Commandant General (CG) of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence (NSCDC) is in recognition of the great work he has been doing in the protection of critical national infrastructure and a significant move towards bolstering national security and safeguarding public assets through dedicated partnerships and collaborations.
Scheduled to take place at the prestigious Banigo Ebitimi Auditorium, University of Port Harcourt, Choba, on the 9th of November, 2023 with the gracious approval of Professor I.M Siminialayi, the Vice Chancellor of the University, and a willing collaboration from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), this event will go along way in changing public perception and attitude towards critical public assets and resources especially as Nigeria grapples with multifaceted security threats.
The approval, conveyed in a letter dated September 18, 2023, and addressed to the National Coordinator of Save Nigeria Movement, consultants and organisers for the event, marks a pivotal moment in the pursuit of national asset preservation and the role civil society organisations can play to complement government efforts since security is everybody’s business and an attack on national assets is an attack on our collective assets as nation.
This groundbreaking collaboration between the University of Port Harcourt and NSCDC holds immense promise for the nation’s security especially in the preservation and protection of public assets which are often targeted by criminal elements who ignorantly see them as government assets. The event further aims to shed light on the crucial role that ordinary citizens play in safeguarding the country’s valuable resources. As a University community, the multiplier effect of this on staff, students and the people of the South South geopolitical region can only be imagined.
Expected at the event are the top echelons in NSCDC, the Vice Chancellor of University of Port Harcourt and his team, dignitaries from across the country, notably captains of private and public security outfits, alongside industry professionals. This diverse assembly will provide a platform for discussions and insights into fortifying the protection of national assets, a subject at the heart of Uniport and NSCDC due to its paramount importance in the security landscape of Nigeria today. Lectures, speeches and panel discussions will feature prominently.
