Vandals Cause Destruction to Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission Line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported the deliberate destruction of tower 70 on the 330kV Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission Line by vandals. According to Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs, the tower was found unbalanced on the ground during a recent inspection.

The incident occurred on February 26, 2024, around 11:32 pm when the Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission line experienced a trip at the Gwagwalada Transmission Substation. Despite efforts to reclose the line, it was unsuccessful, prompting the need for a physical inspection.

During the inspection, TCN’s Lines and Patrol team discovered that the four footings of Tower 70 were vandalized, causing the tower to collapse on the ground, supported by conductors. This act has significantly reduced the capacity to supply power to Abuja by 250MW.

TCN has mobilized resources to the location and is urgently working on restoring the damaged tower and its associated equipment. In response to this incident, Ndidi Mbah emphasized the importance of vigilance in preventing vandalism of power equipment. She urged the public to report any suspicious activities around power facilities to security operatives or the nearest TCN offices nationwide.
