Zainab Conversion Saga: We’ll Give Zamfara Govt Benefit of the Doubt – Northern CAN

…Assures Christians of Commitment to Address Religious Rights Violations in the North

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has expressed cautious optimism following the Zamfara State Government’s recent clarification regarding the alleged arraignment of Miss Zainab Muhamadu before a Sharia Court for converting to Christianity.

In a statement issued Thursday by CAN Chairman, Rev. Dr. Joseph John Hayab, and signed by the Secretary-General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, the association said it would give the Zamfara State Government the benefit of the doubt in light of its official denial that no such case is currently pending in any court in the state.

While welcoming the government’s swift response, the association stressed the need for continued vigilance and emphasized that any credible future reports of such actions must be handled with the utmost urgency, transparency, and accountability.

“To Christians in the North and across Nigeria, we assure you that CAN remains steadfast in uncovering the truth wherever it is hidden. We will not relent in our efforts to expose and bring an end to all forms of religious persecution and harassment in the region,” the statement read.

CAN commended the collaborative efforts of Zamfara’s security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth groups in defusing tension and promoting peace amid the controversy.

The association urged Christians to remain calm, law-abiding, and prayerful, while reaffirming its unwavering commitment to protecting the fundamental rights of all Nigerians to freely practice their faith without fear or intimidation.

“While this clarification puts the matter to rest for now, we remain ready to act should verified facts suggest otherwise. CAN will continue to work closely with security agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure that religious rights violations are swiftly addressed across the North,” the statement added.

Northern CAN also called on all northern state governments to strengthen collaboration with faith-based organizations to promote mutual understanding and prevent misinformation that could threaten the nation’s fragile peace.

The statement concluded with a firm pledge that CAN will continue to advocate for justice, peace, and religious freedom for all Nigerians, emphasizing that these values are central to the country’s unity and development
