Zonkwa Community Unites Against Gender-Based Violence

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The quiet town of Zonkwa in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area (LGA), Southern Kaduna, transformed into a hub of advocacy as it marked the 2024 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The event, led by the Community Development Coalition (CDC) with support from Global Rights (GR), brought together diverse stakeholders to address the pervasive issue of GBV and its devastating impact on society.

A Call to Action

The event gathered over 350 participants, including community and religious leaders, youth and women’s groups, teachers, local government officials, security agencies, and representatives from the **Ministry of Human Services and Social Development** and the **Ministry of Justice**.

Speaking at the event, CDC Assistant Chairperson Haj. Mato Rabi underscored the need for collective responsibility:
> “This event is a call to action for every stakeholder to take responsibility in combating GBV. The time to break the silence is now, and Zonkwa is showing that change begins with us.”

CDC’s Public Relations Officer, Clement Solomon, reiterated the coalition’s stance:
> “GBV is unacceptable, and collective action is the key to prevention.”

### **Alarming Statistics and Survivors’ Voices**
Mrs. Grace Yohana from the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) in Kafanchan highlighted troubling data:
> “The 2024 GBV reports indicate that Jema’a LGA, which borders Zangon Kataf, has recorded a high number of GBV cases.”

The event also provided a platform for survivors of GBV to share their stories, illuminating the emotional and societal impact of violence. Their testimonies served as a rallying cry for stronger support mechanisms and societal change.

United Against Violence

A local community leader emphasized the importance of breaking the culture of silence:
“This event reminds us that silence is not an option. We must stand together to protect our women and children and create a safe society for all.”

The unified message from participants was clear: ending GBV requires the collective effort of individuals, organizations, and government bodies.

A Beacon of Hope

Zonkwa’s 16 Days of Activism has set a precedent, demonstrating the power of community-led initiatives in creating a future free from violence. The event stands as a testament to the transformative impact of unity in combating GBV.
