10 Key Points About the Upcoming Fourth Mainland Bridge in Lagos

1. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced the commencement of the long-awaited Fourth Mainland Bridge in the first quarter of this year, with construction set to begin by the end of March or April.

2. The Fourth Mainland Bridge is a 38km-long project connecting Lagos Island through Langbasa and Baiyeku in Ikorodu across the Lagos Lagoon to Itamaga, in Ikorodu.

3. The bridge features a 2 x 4 lane carriageway cross-sectional road, including provisions for Bus Rapid Transit Lane and future road contraction.

4. Initially slated for 2017, the project’s construction was rescheduled to begin in 2019, with an estimated cost of N844 billion, but faced delays.

5. In December 2022, CCECC-CRCCIG CONSORTIUM was announced as the preferred bidder for the Fourth Mainland Bridge project, executed through a public-private partnership initiative.

6. The estimated cost of the project is $2.5 billion, with plans to toll the bridge for two years after completion, as per the public-private partnership.

7. The projected completion date for the Fourth Mainland Bridge, upon commencement in 2022, is set for 2027.

8. Eight roads, including the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Igbogbo-Lagos, will align with the Fourth Mainland Bridge.

9. The bridge aims to complement existing structures like Eko, Carter, and Third Mainland Bridges, alleviating traffic congestion.

10. Upon completion, the Fourth Mainland Bridge will become the second-longest bridge in Africa, featuring three toll plazas, nine interchanges, a 4.5-kilometre Lagoon Bridge, and an eco-friendly environment.
