The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed that 12 people were killed in an attack by gunmen in Angwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Police spokesperson Alabo Alfred disclosed in a statement on Monday that the victims included 10 men and two women. He added that two additional bodies were later discovered during search operations in nearby bushes.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday after authorities received reports of gunfire in the area. The Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, led a joint team of security personnel to the scene to restore calm.
The command said coordinated operations involving multiple security agencies are ongoing to track down those responsible. The bodies of the victims have been evacuated to a mortuary, while efforts continue to confirm their identities.
Police authorities urged residents with relevant information to assist ongoing investigations, assuring that those responsible would be brought to justice.
The commissioner also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and residents of the affected community. He said additional security personnel have been deployed to prevent further violence and maintain order in the area.
