Pope Addresses African Culture’s Stance on Same-Sex Blessings

Pope Francis has commented on the challenges faced in accepting blessings for same-sex couples, particularly in Africa, attributing the resistance to cultural influences on the continent.

In an interview with La Stampa, the Pope expressed confidence that critics would eventually comprehend his decision to permit such blessings. However, he acknowledged Africa as a unique case, stating, “A special case is Africans: for them, homosexuality is something bad from a cultural point of view, they don’t tolerate it.”

The Pope clarified that the objections mainly come from small ideological groups. He remains optimistic that the spirit of the ‘Fiducia Supplicans’ declaration by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith would gradually reassure individuals. The declaration aims to foster inclusion rather than division.

The controversy arose from the December release of Fiducia Supplicans, a Vatican document permitting blessings for same-sex couples. Some African bishops rejected the move, emphasizing the cultural perspective and values within their communities.

The Vatican later clarified that these blessings should not be integrated into regular church ceremonies or connected to civil unions or weddings. The institution maintains its view of marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has echoed this sentiment, declaring that Catholic churches in the country would not conduct blessings for same-sex unions, citing alignment with God’s law, Church teachings, national laws, and cultural sensibilities.
