Two students, Leonard Aluor and Chijioke Awoh, were, on Wednesday, arraigned before a Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged membership of a secret cult.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendants are facing a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and membership of an unlawful society, punishable under Sections 97 of the Penal Code, Laws of Benue, 2004.
The Prosecuting Counsel, ASP Hyacinth Gbakor, told the court that a team from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) arrested Aluor and Awoh on June 4, at Yakyor area of Markurdi.
He said that the SARS team got a call from members of the public who reported that cultists were on rampage in the area.
Gbakor further said that the defendants had confessed during police investigation that they were members of the Black Skull confraternity.
The prosecutor further said that the defendants had mentioned other people who were accomplices in the act.
Gbakor, who said that investigation on the matter was still ongoing, asked for adjournment to enable the police conclude their investigation.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Isaac Ajim, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N100,000 each, with a surety each in like sum.
Ajim, thereafter, adjourned the case till July 29, for further mention. (NAN)
