Kogi Calls for Unified, Science-Based Healthcare Delivery on World Health Day

The Kogi State Government has called for stronger collaboration in delivering science-driven healthcare, as part of activities marking World Health Day 2026 in Lokoja.Speaking after a health walk on Tuesday, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adeiza Abdulazeez, said the global theme, “Together for Health, Stand with Science,” highlights the importance of evidence-based approaches in disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Abdulazeez noted that the state is revitalising more than 150 primary healthcare centres and expanding health insurance coverage to improve access to care. He, however, acknowledged ongoing challenges, including limited healthcare access in rural areas, workforce shortages, and persistent disease burdens.

He urged stakeholders to strengthen partnerships across government, academia, and communities, while promoting public trust in science and addressing misinformation. The commissioner also emphasised the need to support local research and ensure that scientific advancements benefit citizens. Reaffirming the ministry’s commitment, Abdulazeez said efforts are focused on building a resilient and inclusive health system, with priority on primary healthcare and workforce development.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Austin Ojotule said the event aimed to raise awareness about public health needs and encourage healthy living. Mr. Hamza Aliyu, Chairperson of KONGONET, also highlighted the importance of science-based planning in addressing health challenges. The event was supported by partners including the Kogi State Ministry of Health, Kogi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, World Health Organization, Nigerian Red Cross, and other organisations.
