The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported that 20 chairmanship candidates in Kano State tested positive for drugs. This finding, part of a larger screening process for the upcoming local government elections, has sparked serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
Details of the Screening
NDLEA’s Kano State Commander, Abubakar Idris Ahmad, reported that all 20 candidates, who are members of the ruling [New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)](https://nnpp.ng/), had consumed substances such as opioids, cannabis, benzodiazepines, and nicotine.
The NDLEA confirmed that no female aspirants have tested positive so far. However, the agency continues to conduct screenings, and more candidates will undergo testing before the final list is submitted to the [Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC)](https://kansiec.org.ng/) for verification.
Impact on the Election Process
The positive drug tests have prompted concerns about the credibility of the upcoming elections, scheduled for October 26. These elections will determine 44 chairmen and 484 councillors across the state’s local government areas. The NDLEA’s ongoing testing process aims to ensure that all candidates meet the necessary standards for office.
Abubakar Idris Ahmad stated, “We have found that 20 aspirants from the ruling NNPP have tested positive for multiple drugs, and the screening process continues.”
