25 Suspected Killers of Oyo University Student Arraigned

On Wednesday, 25 individuals suspected of killing Alex Timileyi, a 200-level engineering student at Ajayi Crowther University, were arraigned before the Chief Magistrate in Oyo State. Timileyi was allegedly beaten to death on May 24, 2023, by his colleagues over accusations of stealing a mobile phone.

Court documents obtained by the press detailed the charges. Timileyi was reportedly attacked and had his hair forcibly shaved by the suspects after being caught with the stolen phone. Following the incident, the university expelled several students believed to be involved and handed them over to the police for prosecution.

An X.com user, “Lord of Warri,” claiming to be a relative of the deceased, petitioned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to ensure justice for Timileyi. In an update on X.com, the activist thanked Oyo State authorities for their efforts in the case and shared documents listing the names of the students and court details.

“Today, June 5, 25 students were arraigned in court in connection with the tragic murder of Prince Alex Timileyin, a son of the Warri Kingdom and a student at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo. The court has remanded them in prison until July 8, pending trial. We appreciate the efforts of the Oyo State Government and the Oyo State Police Command in pursuing justice and ensuring that the perpetrators are held accountable. We await the trial and expect that justice will be served in its entirety,” he wrote.

The court documents included charges against two security personnel, Oladoye Femi Ola and Kehinde Olabusuyi Martins, for conspiring to commit a felony and failing to rescue Timileyi from the aggrieved students.

Ajayi Crowther University has yet to issue further statements on the matter. A source in the state police command could not confirm or deny the news at the time of this report.
