40 Passengers Missing in Sokoto Boat Accident

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

A tragic boat accident on Sunday in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State has left at least 40 people missing.

The boat, which was carrying about 50 passengers—mostly traders heading to the weekly Goronyo market—capsized near Kojiyo village.

The incident has renewed concerns over safety measures on Nigeria’s waterways. Rescue operations are ongoing, with the Sokoto State Government and emergency agencies working to locate survivors and support affected families.

Goronyo Council Chairman, Zubairu Yari, described the accident as heartbreaking and prayed for an end to such tragedies.

“Hundreds have been killed by kidnappers, and now flooding is claiming more lives. We pray such incidents never occur again,” he said.
