ActionAid Condemns Alleged Assault on Women at Ozoro Festival, Calls for Investigation

ActionAid Nigeria has condemned reports of alleged harassment and assault of women and girls during a cultural festival in Ozoro, Delta State, calling for a thorough investigation and accountability. In a statement issued on Friday, Country Director Andrew Mamedu expressed concern over videos circulating on social media that appear to show women being chased and physically harassed during the event. He said such actions, if confirmed, violate the rights and dignity of women and should not be justified under cultural or traditional practices.

ActionAid warned that normalising such incidents could contribute to a wider pattern of gender-based violence and urged authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible through due process. The organisation called on Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to ensure that security agencies act promptly and transparently in addressing the incident.

It also urged law enforcement agencies to review their response and strengthen measures to protect citizens, particularly women and girls, at public events. ActionAid further appealed to the Federal and Delta State Ministries of Women Affairs to provide support for affected individuals, including medical care, counselling, and legal assistance. The group reiterated its commitment to promoting the safety and rights of women and girls.
