Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has approved the allocation of 108 completed one-bedroom housing units to civil servants in the state.The governor made the announcement during the 2026 May Day celebration held at the Peace Park in Yenagoa.
Diri directed the Housing and Property Development Authority and the Head of Service to immediately work out modalities for the allocation of the houses located at the Okaka Housing Estate. He also approved key demands presented by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), including the immediate payment of promotion arrears and the full implementation of annual promotion steps in line with civil service rules.
The governor assured workers in the state Fire Service that they would be captured under the new minimum wage structure, directing the Head of Service and the Commissioner for Local Government to work out the necessary details for its implementation. Recall that the Diri administration had in October 2024 approved a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for civil servants in the state.
On transportation, Governor Diri disclosed plans to procure additional vehicles, including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, for the state transport company to enhance mobility. He noted that ongoing investments in the state’s independent power project would support the operation of the new fleet.While urging local government chairmen to settle outstanding Christmas bonuses for council workers, the governor commended civil servants, teachers, health workers, and other essential service providers for their dedication and partnership with his administration.
In a joint address, the NLC and TUC, read by NLC Chairman, Comrade Barnabas Simon, praised Governor Diri for prioritising workers’ welfare and lauded the progress on the nine-storey Civil Servants Secretariat project, as well as other infrastructural developments across the state. The labour unions reaffirmed their unwavering support for the Diri-led administration.
