7 Skincare Ingredients You Should Never Mix for Healthy Skin

By  Milcah  Tanimu

Achieving glowing, healthy skin involves more than just applying products; it’s essential to mix the right skincare ingredients. Some popular skincare ingredients don’t pair well together, leading to irritation, dryness, or less effective results. Here’s a guide to skincare ingredients you should never mix.

1. Retinol/Retinoids and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) Both retinol and AHAs are powerful for exfoliation, but using them together can cause excessive dryness and irritation. Alternate their use—retinol at night, AHAs during the day.

2. Retinol/Retinoids and Benzoyl Peroxide While both help with acne, benzoyl peroxide can deactivate retinol, making it less effective. Use them at different times of the day to avoid dryness and irritation.

3. Retinol/Retinoids and Vitamin C Vitamin C works best in an acidic environment, while retinol requires a more alkaline pH. Mixing them may cause irritation and reduce their effectiveness. Apply vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night.

4. Retinol/Retinoids and Salicylic Acid Both ingredients are exfoliants, and combining them can overwhelm your skin, causing dryness, redness, and oil production. Use salicylic acid in the morning and retinol at night.

5. Niacinamide and AHAs/BHAs Niacinamide can become irritated by AHAs and BHAs, leading to redness. Use niacinamide in the morning and acids at night to avoid skin irritation.

6. Vitamin C and AHAs/BHAs While both exfoliate, using them together can enhance irritation. Apply vitamin C in the morning and AHAs/BHAs in the evening for optimal results.

7. Benzoyl Peroxide and Hydroquinone These ingredients can irritate and even stain your skin when used together. Apply them on alternate days to avoid adverse reactions.

For healthy, glowing skin, be mindful of how you layer products and always consult a dermatologist when uncertain about mixing ingredients.
