10,000 Youths To Gain Employment In Sidi International Onion Market

Sokoto state government has projected that between 5,000 to 10,000 youths are expected to be gainfully employed by the Sidi International Onion Market which is under construction in the state.

The multi billion naira market is expected to commence first phase operations by the end of this month.

Statement by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Lands, Housing and Regional Planning Alhaji Ahmad Moyi Tambuwal said the remaining phases of the market include provision for 5,000 metric tonnes of onion vegetables storage facility with plan for future expansion.

The statement also said the market is the first of its kind in the whole sub Saharan region established under a private partnership with a memorandum of understanding already signed with the Sokoto state government on 8th March 2022.

It said the market was designed to accommodate more than 3,000 shops in addition to the 250 warehouses mostly open designed for onion and garlic wholesale trading among others.

Established by Alhaji Sa’ad Sidi Mamman Asarakkawa, the Sidi International Onion Market is located along western bypass close to Shehu Kangiwa Secretariat, Sokoto covering about an area of 10 hectares.
