Lagos PDP Commends Resilient and Tolerant Residents on Democracy Day

The Lagos State Chapter of the PDP commends the residents of the state for their resilience and tolerance since the restoration of democracy in 1999. Mr. Akeem Amode, the PDP Publicity Secretary, conveyed this commendation in a message commemorating the Democracy Day anniversary on Monday in Lagos.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari had officially declared June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, in honor of the late Chief M.K.O Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election who tragically passed away while in detention. This declaration came after years of advocacy by civil society groups seeking to immortalize Abiola.

Amode acknowledged that despite the state’s yet-to-realize full dividends of democracy that Abiola and the June 12, 1993 elections symbolized, Lagos had experienced significant challenges, including the “June 12 riot,” following the annulment, which resulted in the loss of lives of several residents. He expressed, “The residents of Lagos State deserve better than what they are currently experiencing under the ruling party. The state is abundantly blessed with natural and human resources, being the commercial hub of the nation, yet there is little or nothing to show for it.”He added, “Lagos, with its substantial income, should have been a trailblazer in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. It should have transformed into a city that rivals renowned global cities like Dubai and Johannesburg.”

Amode, however, assured that once the PDP assumes power in the state through the ongoing election cases in court, the residents will begin to reap the benefits of their resources. He emphasized that any revenue generated within the state will be dedicated to its development.

He extended his best wishes to the residents during this time and encouraged them to anticipate improved governance under the PDP in the near future.
