Delta Governor Approves Recruitment of 700+ Health Workers to Boost Healthcare Delivery

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the recruitment of more than 700 medical and non-medical personnel to strengthen healthcare services across Delta State. The State Commissioner for Health, Joseph Onojaeme, announced the decision in Asaba, stating that the move aligns with ongoing investments in health infrastructure.

He said rising demand for services—driven by upgrades such as the elevation of General Hospital Warri to a central hospital and the near completion of the Mother and Child Hospital in Ekpan—necessitated the recruitment.

According to Onojaeme, 295 staff will be deployed to the Hospital Management Board, while 120 will join the Delta State University Teaching Hospital. The College of Health Technology in Ovrode will recruit 100 personnel, with Asaba Specialist Hospital and Warri Central Hospital receiving 60 and 12 staff respectively. He noted that the exercise also aims to address workforce shortages linked to the migration of health professionals, often referred to as “Japa.

”The commissioner added that a state public health laboratory is nearing completion, while a new psychiatric hospital under construction will further expand services. He said the recruitment process will be transparent and merit-based, with vacancies to be publicly advertised.
