Nigeria Climbs to 39th Position in Latest FIFA Rankings

In the latest FIFA men’s rankings for June, Nigeria has made a positive move by climbing one spot. Previously ranked 40th in the world, the Super Eagles gained six points, propelling them to the 39th position.

The rise in Nigeria’s ranking can be attributed to their impressive performance in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone during the review period. The Nigerian team, led by Jose Peseiro, secured a 3-1 victory against the Leone Stars in a match played in Liberia, thereby securing their qualification for the upcoming AFCON tournament scheduled to be held in Ivory Coast next year.

This improvement in ranking also bodes well for Nigeria’s seeding in the AFCON draw later in 2023, as they continue to occupy a place among the top six African teams. This positioning as a top seed enhances their prospects in the tournament.

Morocco remains Africa’s highest-ranked nation, maintaining their position at 13th in the global ranking. They are followed by Senegal (18th), Tunisia (31st), Algeria (33rd), and (34th), further demonstrating Africa’s footballing prowess on the international stage.

At the global level, Argentina continues to hold the top spot as the reigning world champion, followed by France, Brazil, England, and Belgium in the rankings.
