BREAKING: CAF Postpones 2026 WAFCON to July–August

The Confederation of African Football has postponed the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, moving the tournament in Morocco from its initial March schedule to a new window between July and August.

CAF confirmed the decision in a statement on Thursday, announcing that the competition will now take place from July 25 to August 16, 2026. The tournament had earlier been scheduled for March 17 to April 3.

According to the governing body, the adjustment followed consultations with FIFA and other stakeholders involved in organising the event.

CAF said the rescheduling was necessary to ensure the smooth organisation of the continent’s flagship women’s football competition, noting that preparations are ongoing and stakeholders remain confident of a successful tournament.

Morocco secured the hosting rights for the competition in October 2024.

The change in dates comes amid concerns about readiness for the tournament, with several organisational details—including venues for knockout matches, media accreditation, match officials and technical workshops—yet to be finalised.

For defending champions Nigeria women’s national football team, the revised schedule provides additional preparation time ahead of their title defence.

The tournament will also serve as Africa’s qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Under the format, the four semi-finalists will qualify automatically, while another African team will compete in an intercontinental play-off.
