Following presidential approval for the upgrade of to international status, the Akwa Ibom State Government has announced the airport’s maiden international flight to in this Saturday.
The inaugural international flight will be operated by , the state-owned flagship airline, with departure scheduled from to Ghana on Saturday and a return flight planned for Sunday.
A statement issued by the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, , described the development as a major milestone in the state’s efforts to strengthen aviation infrastructure, improve international connectivity, and position Akwa Ibom as a destination for tourism and investment.
According to the statement, while the maiden flight marks the beginning of international operations from Uyo, the official opening of the new terminal building and full commercial international flight schedules will be announced later.
The state government expressed appreciation to President for approving the airport’s upgrade and to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, , for his role in facilitating the process.
It also acknowledged the contributions of former governors of Akwa Ibom State for their pioneering efforts in developing the state’s aviation sector.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the growth of the aviation ecosystem as part of broader plans for economic development and investment attraction in the state.
