‘Mother Africa’ Crooner, Prince B, Passes Away at 77

By Daniel Edu

Renowned singer Prince Bola Agbana, famously known as Prince B, has sadly left us.

The talented vocalist behind the hit song ‘Mother Africa’ breathed his last on Wednesday, succumbing to a long-standing illness at his residence in Ijanikin, Lagos State.

Prince B’s eldest son, Sunmisola Agbana, confirmed the sad news during an exclusive conversation, sharing that the singer had been grappling with Parkinson’s disease since 2015 and had been bedridden since 2019.

Sunmisola disclosed that despite continuous medical interventions, Prince B’s health continued to deteriorate, leading to his demise on Wednesday.

He expressed, “It is with deep reverence for God’s will that we announce the passing of the legendary musician, Prince Bolarinwa Agbana – known as Prince B – on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. Prince B, a cherished figure in the music industry, whose timeless melodies resonated with millions across the globe.”

Parkinson’s disease ultimately claimed his life, a battle he fought bravely for several years. He approached this arduous journey with the same elegance, fortitude, and unwavering spirit that defined his music. His bravery in the face of adversity inspired all who had the privilege of knowing him.

“We extend heartfelt appreciation to the medical professionals, caregivers, family, and well-wishers who supported Prince Bolarinwa during his battle with Parkinson’s,” Sunmisola added.

He continued, “During this challenging time, we request privacy as we mourn the loss of our beloved father, husband, and friend. As we grieve, we also honor the enduring impact of his music and the lasting impression he left on our hearts.”

Details regarding funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

Margaret, the singer’s wife, mourned her husband’s loss and celebrated his memory. She described him as her “source of love, strength, and unwavering support,” and expressed that his love would forever illuminate her heart.

“Death is a universal truth, and my beloved husband has passed away, as permitted by God. He wasn’t just my life partner, but also the foundation of my love, strength, and consistent support. His memory will forever radiate in my heart, and I’m grateful for the cherished moments we shared together,” she shared.

Born on September 23, 1946, Prince B embarked on his musical journey during his youth, joining the Moon Rakers Band in the early 1970s.

Although he might not be the most instantly recognizable name among Nigerian music icons, he spent a substantial part of the past five decades as a driving force, playing a pivotal role in its evolution.

As an early and respected advocate of funk, he played a key role in integrating drums into juju music as a modern genre. He is acknowledged as the founder, leader, drummer, and primary vocalist of the SJOB Movement.

Prince B eventually achieved global recognition with his hit track “Mother Africa,” performed alongside his Jambos Express Band. His soulful compositions have left an indelible mark on Nigerian music history.

Throughout his musical career, Prince B used his artistic expression not only to entertain but also to champion causes close to his heart. He was a fervent advocate for peace, love, and prosperity across the African continent.

Beyond his musical prowess, he will be remembered for his philanthropy and efforts to foster unity wherever he went.

In his own words, “Music possesses the power to heal and unify.”
