Tinubu Accuses Opposition of Misrepresenting Electoral Act, Rejects One-Party Claims

President Bola Tinubu has criticised opposition parties for what he described as deliberate misrepresentation of the Electoral Act, urging political actors to avoid distorting the law for partisan advantage.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention in Abuja, Tinubu said persistent attacks on the Electoral Act were misleading and harmful to Nigeria’s democratic development.

He maintained that the legislation followed due legislative process, including public hearings and approval by the National Assembly, and should be seen as a collective effort to strengthen the electoral system.

The President also dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress is pushing Nigeria toward a one-party state, despite recent defections from opposition parties.

According to him, democracy thrives on competition, stressing the importance of a credible opposition in promoting accountability and good governance.

Tinubu, however, warned members of his party against internal divisions, noting that political parties often weaken due to ego, indiscipline, and conflicting interests rather than electoral defeat.

He urged party stakeholders to prioritise unity and conduct themselves responsibly during the convention.

The President also defended his administration’s economic reforms, acknowledging their difficulty but insisting they were necessary for long-term stability and growth.

He said recent policy measures were beginning to yield results, citing improvements in economic indicators, increased investor confidence, and ongoing infrastructure development.

The remarks come amid heightened political tensions and debates over electoral reforms ahead of future elections.
