Outrage in Abuja as council revenue staff shot dead during permit enforcement

The Director of Operations, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Comrade Shehu Shugaba, has called on the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, to investigate the alleged killing of an AMAC revenue officer, Mr. Oladipupo Akinola, last Friday at NITEL Junction, Wuse 2, Abuja.

Shugaba made the appeal during an interview with our correspondent, urging the FCT Police Command and other security agencies in the territory to ensure a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased and his family.

Our correspondent gathered that the late revenue officer, who served under AMAC’s Mobile Advert Permit department, was allegedly shot dead by an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) during a routine enforcement operation to identify vehicles defaulting on the 2026 operational permits.

The AMAC Director of Operations explained that the deceased and his colleagues had stopped a Hilux vehicle at NITEL Junction to verify whether it was a private or operational vehicle.

He said the revenue officers, while carrying out their routine duties, discovered that the vehicle belonged to a Chinese company and requested its 2026 operational permit.

“The officers found that the vehicle was only carrying a 2025 operational permit, which had already expired,” Shugaba stated.

He continued: “When the revenue officers impounded the vehicle for having expired documents, one of the occupants made a phone call to their office. Shortly after, two men in NSCDC uniforms arrived at the scene and joined the vehicle’s occupants.

“During the altercation that ensued between the NSCDC operatives, the vehicle occupants, and the AMAC revenue officers, one of the NSCDC operatives shot and killed the AMAC staff.”

Shugaba added that immediately after the shooting, the vehicle occupants and the NSCDC operatives fled the scene in the Hilux, and neither the vehicle nor the occupants had been identified.

He stressed that many AMAC revenue officers on Abuja roads are not touts but legitimate government officials carrying out lawful revenue collection duties, and urged residents to accord them respect while they perform their responsibilities
