Police explain the use of tear gas to disperse Mohbad’s sympathizers at Lekki

The Lagos State Police Command has explained that it dispersed sympathizers who had gathered to mourn the death of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad, at the Lekki Toll Gate. This action was taken to prevent a recurrence of the EndSARS protests, as stated in a press release signed by the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, and published on the verified Lago State Police X page on Friday.

According to the statement, there had been an agreement between the police and the organizers of the procession that the Lekki Toll Gate should not be used as a gathering point, which was adhered to during the procession. However, some individuals later violated this agreement by gathering there.

Efforts were made by the police and the organizers to persuade the sympathizers to disperse peacefully, but these efforts proved unsuccessful. As a result, tear gas was used to disperse the crowd in order to protect lives and property in the area.

The statement emphasized that the procession was supposed to end at Muri Okunola, Victoria Island, by 8 pm as agreed upon. It was made clear that the Lekki Toll Gate was off-limits due to heavy traffic on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

The police and organizers tried to convince the people gathered at the toll gate to go home peacefully. Messages were also shared on social media clarifying that it was a procession, not a protest, and it had concluded successfully. However, this persuasion was met with defiance, leading to the use of tear gas.

The police emphasized that no live ammunition was fired, and they employed crowd management best practices to engage with the unruly crowd, ensuring no loss of life or injuries.

The statement also warned against any individual or group using Mohbad’s death as an opportunity to disrupt the peace of the state. It assured that updates would be provided on the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death and appreciated the cooperation of the procession organizers.

In conclusion, the statement stated that the police had been closely coordinating with support groups advocating for justice for Mohbad and would continue to prioritize the safety and security of Lagosians. It called for cooperation and avoidance of unnecessary distractions to allow for a conclusive and timely investigation.
