Kogi Doctors End Strike Following Government’s Pledge to Secure Kidnapped Colleague’s Release

Doctors in Kogi State have decided to suspend the strike they initiated two days ago to protest the abduction of their fellow medical professional, Dr. Austin Uwumagbe. This decision comes in response to assurances from the state government that they are committed to ensuring the safe return of Dr. Uwumagbe.

Dr. Austin Uwumagbe, the Director of Victory Hospital-Annex in Ogaminana, was abducted by unknown gunmen last week and has remained in captivity since then.

The announcement of the suspension of the 72-hour strike was made in a communique issued on Thursday. The communique was jointly signed by Dr. Olusola Baoku, Chairman of the Kogi State NMA, and Dr. Emmanuel Kelvin, Secretary of the same association, following an emergency Congress meeting.

The Emergency Congress Meeting was convened to assess the strike action taken by the doctors as a protest against the kidnapping of their colleague, Dr. Uwumagbe. In the communique, the doctors noted that the strike had effectively conveyed their displeasure to the broader society. They also emphasized that relevant security agencies and stakeholders had demonstrated a significant commitment to ensuring the safe release of their kidnapped colleague.
