WAEC Announces Final Ruling Regarding Seized and Withheld Results from 2023 Examination

By Daniel Edu

The West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) has made its conclusive decisions regarding candidates whose results were seized or withheld from the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2023.

These decisions were reached during the 76th meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) of WAEC, held from Tuesday, October 3rd, to Wednesday, October 4th, 2023.

WAEC has stated that the entire results of candidates found to have engaged in examination malpractice, which incurs the penalty of Cancellation of Entire Results (CER), will be nullified. Additionally, subject results of candidates proven to have participated in examination malpractice, which attracts the penalty of Cancellation of Subject Results (CSR), will also be canceled.

During the meeting, it was resolved that the results of candidates who were cleared of any wrongdoing by the Committee would be promptly released.

WAEC has assured that these directives will be put into action as soon as possible, and the affected candidates and schools will be duly informed.

The official statement was disseminated via WAEC’s X platform (formerly known as Twitter). The statement in full reads:

“The 76th Meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) was held from Tuesday, 3rd to Wednesday, 4th October 2023.

“At the meeting, the Committee received and considered reports on the conduct of WASSCE for School Candidates, 2023, as well as irregularity cases arising from the conduct of the examination.

“The Committee directed that the entire results of candidates proven to have been involved in examination malpractice, which attract the penalty of Cancellation of Entire Results (CER), be cancelled.

“Similarly, subject results of Candidates proven to have been involved in examination malpractice, which attract the penalty of Cancellation of Subject Results (CSR), be cancelled.

“The directives of the Committee will be implemented as soon as possible, and the Council will inform the affected candidates and Schools. Subsequently, the results of candidates exonerated by the Committee will be released without further delay.

“The Committee also implored the States’ Ministries of Education and the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) to adhere strictly to the registration deadline for WASSCE for School Candidates’ examination diets.

“In conclusion, the Committee commended the Council for the thorough investigations conducted on the reported examination malpractice cases presented during the meeting.”

The Committee, serving as the highest decision-making body of WAEC on examination-related matters in Nigeria, convenes twice a year to deliberate on issues related to the administration of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for both School and Private Candidates.
