Rafael Nadal Set to Make Tennis Comeback at 2024 Australian Open

By Daniel Edu

The organizers of the prestigious Australian Open have officially announced that tennis legend Rafael Nadal will make his return to the sport at the 2024 Australian Open.

Nadal has been absent from the tennis scene since sustaining a hip flexor injury in January, which led to his early exit from the Australian Open, where he lost to Mackenzie McDonald. The injury necessitated surgery in June of the same year.

The Spanish champion had previously hinted that the upcoming season would likely be his final one, and this announcement marks a much-anticipated return to the sport. While he had to skip the French Open for the first time in 19 years due to his injury, he has been diligently working on his recovery and training for his return to competitive tennis. The 2024 Australian Open in January could potentially be his first Grand Slam appearance post-surgery.

Craig Tiley, the director of the competition, confirmed this exciting development, stating, “We can reveal exclusively here that Rafa will be back. He’s been off for most of the year, and in talking to him over the last few days, he confirmed he will be back, which we’re really excited about, the champion of 2022. That’s awesome.”

Notably, Nadal has won the Australian Open twice in his career. During his absence, his chief rival, Novak Djokovic, has continued to dominate the Grand Slam scene, increasing his overall Grand Slam tally to 24, making him the most successful player in the men’s category.

Tiley also shared that past women’s champions, such as Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber, and Naomi Osaka, plan to make their return to the competition after maternity leaves. In addition, the Australian Open will undergo a scheduling change in 2024, lasting for 15 days to reduce the number of late-night matches, a move aimed at enhancing the overall experience of the tournament at Melbourne Park.
