The Federal Executive Council Approves Creation of Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund”

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has granted approval for the establishment of the Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund. The decision to create this fund is part of the Nigerian government’s ongoing efforts to alleviate economic hardships experienced by vulnerable citizens. This initiative aims to provide financial support to individuals and communities facing poverty and humanitarian crises.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, revealed this development during a briefing with State House correspondents after the third Council meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu in the Council Chamber at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Key details about the Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund include:

1. **Expected Fund Size**: The fund is anticipated to amass an annual sum of up to $5 million.

2. **Governing Board**: A governing board will be established to oversee the proper implementation of the fund’s resources. The composition of the board will include members with expertise in relevant fields such as finance and other relevant areas.

3. **Contributions**: Contributions to the fund will come from various sources, including the government, private sector, development partners, individuals, and philanthropic organizations. The goal is to create a flexible financing mechanism that can respond effectively to humanitarian crises and address poverty issues in Nigeria.

4. **Support for Vulnerable Citizens**: The fund’s primary objective is to provide emergency responses to humanitarian crises in Nigeria, such as natural disasters and other challenges. It also aims to address the issue of poverty as part of President Bola Tinubu’s eight-point agenda.

The approval of the Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund underscores the government’s commitment to assisting vulnerable individuals and communities, particularly in times of crisis. This initiative aims to make Nigeria more resilient to humanitarian challenges and provide essential support to those in need.

Additionally, the Federal Executive Council also approved the ratification of the Protocol on the Protection of the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria. This move aligns Nigeria with the African charter that protects and safeguards the rights of older citizens, ensuring they are not subjected to discrimination.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Solid Mineral Development received approval for a draft policy to regulate the solid minerals sector, which includes mining, operations, guidelines, regulatory frameworks, and environmental considerations. The approval of this policy empowers the ministry to address issues such as security, illegal mining activities, and overall sector management.

In conclusion, these developments reflect the government’s efforts to address various societal challenges, support vulnerable groups, and promote economic stability and growth.
