Court Awards N50 Million in Favor of Orits Wiliki in Copyright Dispute

By Milcah Tanimu

The Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled in favor of musician Orits Wiliki in a copyright dispute, awarding him the sum of N50 million as damages for the loss of revenue. The lawsuit was filed against Premier Records regarding the use and sales of the albums “Tribulation,” “Conqueror,” and “Wha’ Dis Wha’ Dat.”

The court determined that the recording contract between Orits Wiliki and Premier Records expired after 25 years from the album’s release and found the contract relied upon by Premier Records to be inconsistent. As a result, the court issued an order of perpetual injunction against Premier Records, restraining them from further use or sale of the albums “Tribulation,” “Conqueror,” and “Wha’ Dis Wha’ Dat.”
