In a harrowing incident, suspected armed robbers recently invaded the Ipara-Remo and Ode-Remo communities, targeting students from Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade, in Ogun State. The attackers, reportedly storming the areas around 1 am on two separate occasions, engaged in violence, shooting students, molesting female victims, and looting belongings.
Several students, including Francis Dwumfour, were injured, with photographic evidence revealing the aftermath—damaged property, bullet shells, and physical injuries. The attacks, escalating during the most recent incident, have raised concerns among the affected communities.
Students, speaking anonymously, revealed that such robbery incidents have been recurrent, with the latest assault being particularly severe. One source disclosed a previous attack two Fridays ago, where students were shot, and another incident in 2022, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by residents.
Despite a ‘Save Our Souls’ call to local police during the attacks, students claim their pleas were ignored. Olatunji Alexander, the Students Union President, expressed frustration with the police response, disputing reports of a student fatality but acknowledging injuries sustained during the assaults.
Olusola Ezekiel, Director of Polytechnic Affairs for the National Association of Nigerian Students, blamed the attacks on the lack of hostel facilities at the polytechnic, leaving students vulnerable to such incidents. He emphasized the urgent need for the institution and local communities to address security concerns and protect students.
An anonymous member of the polytechnic management acknowledged the awareness of the attacks, assuring that efforts were underway to enhance security. The newly appointed Rector reportedly engaged with stakeholders to find lasting solutions.
However, the management appealed to the state government for additional support, recognizing the limitations of the institution in handling the security situation independently.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the attacks and the discharge of the injured student from the hospital. Odutola urged students to report incidents formally to the police, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between students, school authorities, and the Ogun State Police Command to address security challenges effectively. The police spokesperson clarified that no student lost their life during the attacks.
