FCTA, Finland to Partner on Smart City, Waste Management Solutions

By Joyce Remi Babayeju

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration has indicated its interest in partnering with the Republic of Finland in advancing smart city technology, waste management, and sustainable urban development in Abuja.

The FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike disclosed this on Tuesday while receiving the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria during a courtesy visit in Abuja.

The meeting highlighted a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and fostering technical cooperation in line with the Federal Government’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

Wike noted that Abuja’s rapid urban expansion has necessitated strategic partnerships to sustain infrastructure growth and modern city management systems.

He emphasized the FCTA’s readiness to collaborate with Finland, particularly in areas where the European nation has proven expertise.

“As a city, we are open to cooperation with others across the world, especially in infrastructure, agriculture, smart city development, and green energy,” the minister said.

He further assured members of the diplomatic community of improved security within the FCT, stressing that the administration remains committed to providing a safe and enabling environment for foreign partners.

A major focus of the discussions was the urgent need to upgrade Abuja’s waste management framework.

Wike called for the involvement of competent Finnish firms to support the FCT in developing efficient and sustainable waste disposal systems.

“Waste management is very key for us. We are ready to engage any capable firm that can help us manage our waste effectively,” he added.

In her response, the Finnish Ambassador reaffirmed her country’s interest in deepening cooperation with Nigeria, particularly in digital innovation and environmental sustainability.

She noted that Finland is globally recognized for its advanced digital systems, water management, and circular economy solutions, adding that recent engagements between both countries have further strengthened ties.

According to her, a Memorandum of Understanding on digitalization and innovation has already been signed, paving the way for more practical collaborations.

The envoy expressed optimism that Finland’s technological expertise—especially from its capital region—could be effectively replicated in Abuja through concrete projects, thereby boosting economic and technical cooperation between both nations.
