Visually Impaired UNIZIK Student Honored as Best Candidate by WAEC

In a remarkable achievement, Precious Mbajiorgu, a visually impaired student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has been honored by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) as the best candidate in the physical disability category for the 2022 Senior School Certificate Examination.

Precious, who lost her sight at the age of 11, recently shared her inspiring journey in an interview. She recounted the pivotal moment when she realized her blindness while solving mathematics questions in primary school. Despite facing numerous challenges and visiting multiple hospitals, she adapted to her new reality, persevered, and continued her education.

After enrolling in remedial courses at Oji River Special Education Centre and later completing her secondary education at St John of God Secondary School in Awka, Precious gained admission to study Guidance and Counselling at UNIZIK.

The visually impaired student expressed the financial challenges associated with her education, highlighting the higher costs for learning aids. She emphasized the need for a recorder and other tools to enhance her learning experience.

Despite the hurdles, Precious remains determined, socially active, and has made friends who support her at UNIZIK. She shared her daily routine, struggles with transportation costs, and the lack of funds for medical checkups due to her father’s sudden death.

Reflecting on her journey, Precious discussed the depression she faced initially but overcame through prayer and meditation. She stressed the importance of focus and perseverance, citing instances of insults from fellow students. Precious also highlighted the impact of financial constraints on her siblings’ education, calling for assistance.

Recently, WAEC contacted Precious through her school, leading to her recognition and subsequent award. The visually impaired student dedicated her achievement to Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his commitment to education and empowerment of physically challenged individuals.

Looking ahead, Precious expressed optimism about replicating her success at the university and outlined her target for academic achievement. She shared her reliance on reading and using PDF materials, emphasizing the need for essential learning tools.

This inspiring journey exemplifies resilience, determination, and the pursuit of academic excellence against formidable odds.
