Surviving Nigeria’s Harmattan Season: Essential Tips

As the Harmattan season sweeps across Nigeria, bringing with it dry air, dust, and chilly temperatures, it’s crucial to adapt to the challenges posed by this weather. Originating from the Twi word “haramata,” this season is marked by dry, dusty trade winds from the Sahara desert. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local, understanding how to navigate Nigeria’s two seasons is essential. Here are some tips to help you survive the intense Harmattan weather:

1. Stay Hydrated:
Combat dehydration by drinking at least 1.5 liters of water daily. Avoid carbonated drinks and juices, as water helps keep your entire body functioning properly in the dry atmosphere.

2. Adjust Outfits:
Dress appropriately for the varying temperatures. Wear warm clothing during chilly nights and mornings, and adjust as the day warms up. This ensures you stay comfortable in both cold and hot conditions.

3. Take Vitamin C:
Boost your immune system by taking vitamin C. This helps reduce the risk of contracting flu or catarrh, especially in dusty and cold environments during the Harmattan season.

4. Moisturize:
Combat dry skin with the help of lip balm and moisturizer. Keep these essentials in your bag and apply as needed to prevent dry lips and skin. The dry air during Harmattan can be harsh on your skin, so moisturizing is key.

5. Be Careful with Fires:
Due to the dry conditions, fires can easily spread during Harmattan. Avoid burning indiscriminately, and if necessary, ensure fires are attended and well-monitored to prevent accidents.

6. Avoid Dusty Areas:
For individuals with asthma, Harmattan’s dusty winds can trigger attacks. Stay away from dusty areas, and if exposure is unavoidable, wear a nose/face mask to reduce inhalation of dust particles.

7. Wear Protective Hairstyles:
Harmattan can be harsh on hair, especially for those with 4c hair. Protect your hair by wearing styles that keep the ends hidden, such as braids or scarves. Keep your hair moisturized to prevent dryness and breakage.

8. Avoid Flying:
Flights are often impacted during Harmattan due to intense haze, leading to cancellations or rescheduling. If possible, opt for alternative means of transport to avoid travel disruptions.

By following these tips, you can navigate Nigeria’s Harmattan season more comfortably, ensuring your well-being and adapting to the unique challenges posed by this weather.
