Nigerian Bar Association Urges Resolution of Osun JUSUN Strike

The leadership of the Osogbo Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) appealed on Thursday for an end to the ongoing strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) in Osun State, which has persisted for approximately a month.

The strike, initiated on November 22, stemmed from an incident where the police prevented JUSUN members from physically confronting the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Adepele Ojo. The union accused the Chief Judge of abuse of office and withholding their allowances.

Yemi Abiona, Chairman of Osogbo NBA, emphasized the adverse effects of the strike on lawyers, highlighting the closure of courts and its impact on legal proceedings. Abiona expressed concern about awaiting trial inmates whose release has been delayed due to the ongoing industrial action.

Abiona stated, “The strike embarked upon by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria, Osun State branch is going to a month now and it has continued to have negative impacts on the lives of lawyers in particular.”

He further emphasized the plea for JUSUN members to reconsider their stance, encouraging them to engage in negotiations after resumption. Abiona highlighted the widespread impact of the strike, not only on lawyers but also on individuals awaiting trial whose cases have been put on hold during the strike.
