Plateau Massacre: Threats of Fresh Attacks Emerge as UN Calls for Investigation

In a chilling turn of events, invaders responsible for the recent massacre in Plateau State have issued threats of fresh attacks on a community just days after claiming the lives of 195 individuals across 17 communities. The Middle Belt Forum’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Stanley Kavwam, revealed that the Pushit community in the Mangu Local Government Area has received a letter warning of an imminent assault.

Despite awareness of the threat, the police assured that intelligence was being addressed. Residents in Pushit shared the harrowing experience of living in constant fear since learning of the impending attack. One villager, Joshua Bukat, expressed concerns about the residents’ safety and pleaded for government intervention.

Amidst this alarming development, the United Nations has called for a thorough investigation into the Christmas Eve massacre, which displaced over 10,000 people. The UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, emphasized the need for accountability, urging Nigerian authorities to uphold international human rights law.

Meanwhile, the Middle Belt Forum’s Kavwam disclosed that the military had prior knowledge of the attackers and their plans, underscoring the urgent need for effective security measures. He lamented the lack of intervention during the Christmas Eve attacks and criticized the flaws in the state’s security architecture.

As the Pushit community braces for a potential assault today, concerns grow over the security challenges in Plateau State. The Federal Government, represented by Minister of Police Affairs Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, has pledged to apprehend those responsible for the heinous crimes, emphasizing a commitment to ongoing police reforms despite the tragic incident. The unfolding situation underscores the pressing need for swift and comprehensive action to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further bloodshed.
