By Francis Wilfred

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its support for the African International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) 2026, emphasizing the need for stronger inter-agency collaboration to enhance Nigeria’s security and innovation landscape. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, gave the assurance during a meeting with organisers of the event in Abuja, according to a statement by the ministry.

He described AFRIDEX as a strategic platform that could strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture by fostering collaboration among security agencies, innovators, and industry stakeholders. Tunji-Ojo stressed that sustainable national security requires coordinated efforts, noting that agencies must move beyond isolated operations and embrace shared responsibility.

He also highlighted the role of Nigerian youths in driving innovation, particularly in digital technology and cybersecurity, adding that showcasing local talent on a global stage could boost economic growth and competitiveness.

The minister called for stronger links between research, innovation, and market opportunities, urging stakeholders to create platforms that connect innovators with investors, manufacturers, and policymakers. He further encouraged organisers to sustain AFRIDEX as an annual event and recommended the establishment of a visa support desk to facilitate international participation.

Leader of the delegation, Umar Alkali, said AFRIDEX 2026 will hold from October 26 to 29 in Lagos and is expected to attract global exhibitors and participants in the defence and security sector. Both parties expressed commitment to partnerships aimed at positioning Nigeria as a hub for defence innovation.
