In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has overturned the rulings of lower courts that previously ousted Kano State Governor, Yusuff Abba.
The tribunal had nullified Abba’s victory, declaring 165,663 of his votes invalid due to unstamped and unsigned ballot papers. Following an appeal, the higher court maintained the tribunal’s decision, criticizing the lower court for not disqualifying the governor on grounds of improper sponsorship by the New Nigeria Peoples Party, violating constitutional provisions.
However, the Supreme Court, led by Justice John Okoro, directed the restoration of all ballot papers from which Abba’s votes were deducted. Justice Okoro emphasized that these papers adhered to Electoral Act specifications with the INEC logo and coat of arms. Additionally, he asserted that party membership matters are internal affairs and not subject to external interference.
This ruling effectively reinstates Yusuff Abba as the rightful governor of Kano State. Further details will follow.
