The Acting Executive Chairman of BIRS, Mr Emmanuel Agema, made this disclosure at a meeting with the management, Zonal Tax Officers and Area Tax Officers at the Service’s headquarters in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
A statement by the Media Aide to the Chairman, Jacinta Bernard, quoted her Boss as maintaining that ” remitting Pay As You Earn, is not meant to impede the growth and progress of companies in the state.”
The Tax Boss explained that Pay As You Earn is a method of collecting personal income tax from employee’s salaries and wages by an employer through deduction at source as provided by the personal income tax Act,PITA, (S.81 of personal income tax Act Cap P8 LFN 2004).
The Chairman emphasized that monies collected from employee’s salaries are not companies money, explaining that companies do not pay personal income tax and as such remitting funds collected from workers can’t retard or interfere with company’s growth and success.
