NGO Sensitises Bayelsa Community Against Female Genital Mutilation

Worried about the age-long practice of female genital mutilation in Nigeria, a non-government organisation, Women Organized for Mentorship and Advocacy Network (WOMAN) has joined the United Nations and UNICEF to raise awareness
campaign to residents of Opolo Community in Yenagoa local government area of Bayelsa State to sensitise the people on dangers of female circumcision.
The campaign with the theme; “Her Voice. Her Future” was held at the Opolo Community Market, Yenagoa.

Speaking at the event to mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, Lady Eunice Nnachi, the Executive Director of WOMAN said female genital mutilation, which is the removal of the upper clitoris from the women genital does not have any benefit.

She sensitise them on the risk of FGM which can lead to anxiety, depression, unstopped bleeding, discrimination and also urinary problem, delayed child-birth.

She urged the state government and other agencies to take action to end this practice in rural areas.

Lady Stella Doumu added that the practice can result in a lack of sexual satisfaction and, in some cases, infertility. The call to end female genital mutilation is an important step in promoting the health and well-being of women and girls in the region.
