The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has strongly criticized the proposed education loan scheme, raising concerns that it will leave students burdened with insurmountable debt. Following its National Executive Council meeting in Bayelsa State, ASUU expressed disappointment over unfulfilled commitments from the Bola Tinubu-led administration. The union reiterated its rejection of the Students Loan Scheme, alleging that it would starve public universities of necessary funding while facilitating the diversion of public funds to private universities. ASUU warned that the scheme could lead to perpetual indebtedness for students, emphasizing the need for alternative measures such as grants, scholarships, and the reintroduction of the Needs-Based Budgeting System for efficient investment in students’ futures.
