NLC Plans Two-Day Nationwide Protest Against Economic Hardship

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans for a two-day nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and February 28, 2024, as part of its efforts to address economic challenges in the country.

According to Joe Ajaero, the National President of NLC, the decision to organize the protest comes after an emergency National Executive Council meeting to discuss the state of the economy and concerns related to insecurity.

The protest will commence a week after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to the Federal Government, set to end on February 23.

During a briefing with journalists in Abuja, Ajaero emphasized the importance of the government meeting the demands outlined within the ultimatum period, stressing that the Federal Government should not disregard the deadline.

The labour union expressed grave concerns over the plight of Nigerian workers, citing issues such as hunger, decreased purchasing power, and insecurity exacerbated by recent reforms. These reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the lifting of currency trading restrictions, have led to a significant increase in inflation and petrol prices.

The NLC’s planned protest is part of its advocacy efforts to address these challenges and ensure the welfare of Nigerian workers.
