NUSA Chairman Describes Tragic Lion Attack at OAU, Leading to Zookeeper’s Death

By Daniel Edu

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has closed its zoological garden following a tragic incident on Monday, where a nine-year-old lion killed a veterinary technologist, Olabode Olawuyi.

Wole Odewumi, the Chairman of the National Association of Non-Academic Staff of Universities (NASU) at OAU, provided details of the incident to Punch on Tuesday. He confirmed the closure of the zoo and described how the attack unfolded.

According to Odewumi, the lion initially targeted a woman working at the zoo. Olawuyi bravely intervened to rescue the woman, assuming the lion would recognize him. However, the animal attacked Olawuyi instead, leading to fatal consequences.

After the attack, Olawuyi was rushed to the health centre on campus but succumbed to his injuries before reaching the facility. The woman who was initially targeted by the lion is still receiving treatment.

Odewumi mentioned that a mourning procession was held on the campus in honor of Olawuyi, and the university’s management met with his family. He further stated that a committee, including a representative from Olawuyi’s union, would be formed to address the issues raised by the incident.

The zoo has been officially locked up, and the university management has temporarily restricted access to the area. Odewumi emphasized that the university is taking necessary actions in response to the tragic incident.
