By Daniel Edu

The remains of the late former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, have been brought to the state in preparation for his funeral rites and burial. Akeredolu passed away on December 26, 2023, at the age of 68, after a battle with prostate cancer in a German hospital.

As per the burial arrangements released by the family, the funeral rites began with the Ajabue traditional rite in Akeredolu’s hometown of Owo, the headquarters of the Owo Local Government Area. A Special Court Session was also held in his honor at Court 1 of the Ondo State High Court on the same day, with the Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola, describing the late governor as a man of courage.

The funeral program includes a Lying in State and Commendation Service at the Akure Township Stadium, an Evening of Tributes at Saint Andrews Church in Owo, and a Service of Songs at St. Andrews Cathedral, Imola Street, Owo, on Thursday, February 22.

On Friday, February 23, there will be a funeral service at St. Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo, followed by interment at the burial site in Owo, reserved for immediate family. A reception will be held at Midas Hotel and Resort, Ikare Road, Owo, by 1:00 pm.

The program continues with an Akeredolu Memorial Friendly Football Match at Akure Township Stadium on Saturday, February 24, at 3:00 pm. On Sunday, February 25, a Thanksgiving Service will be held at St. Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo, at 10:00 am.
