Gary Neville has praised Ayden Heaven following his standout performance for Manchester United against Chelsea FC, comparing the young defender to legendary centre-backs Sergio Ramos and Pepe.
Heaven, who joined United from Arsenal FC in February 2025 for a reported fee of between £1 million and £1.5 million, delivered an assured performance in defence. The 18-year-old, who previously rejected a professional contract at Arsenal, has since committed to a long-term deal at Old Trafford.
Against Chelsea, Heaven displayed a blend of composure and aggression, making key tackles and interceptions while maintaining accuracy in his distribution. His efforts played a crucial role in keeping United organised at the back despite sustained pressure.
Speaking after the match, Neville questioned why the teenager has not featured more regularly, suggesting his consistent performances warrant greater involvement. He also highlighted Heaven’s calmness on the ball and willingness to engage physically—traits often associated with top-level defenders.
Neville went on to say that Heaven’s fearless tackling and commanding presence reminded him of Ramos and Pepe at their peak, while also noting elements of composure similar to Virgil van Dijk.
The former United captain concluded that the club may have unearthed a valuable long-term asset, adding that increased playing time—particularly in potential European fixtures—could accelerate Heaven’s development into a first-team regular.
