The Northern Christian Association (NCA) has called on security agencies to investigate a viral video allegedly showing an Islamic cleric placing a ₦2 million bounty on a pastor accused of blasphemy, warning that inaction could heighten tensions and threaten public safety in northern Nigeria.
In a statement issued in Kaduna, NCA Chairman Rev. Joseph John Hayab said the alleged incident raises concerns about incitement and the potential for unrest. He urged the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force to verify the video and take appropriate legal action if wrongdoing is established. Hayab said religious leaders are expected to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence, adding that the association’s commitment to peace “should not be mistaken for weakness.”
He also called on Islamic leaders to publicly condemn any form of violence linked to religious disputes and to encourage lawful responses to grievances.Citing Section 33(1) of the 1999 Constitution, Hayab noted that the right to life is protected under Nigerian law and must not be undermined by threats or extrajudicial actions.The NCA urged restraint among all parties and advised citizens to report concerns to authorities rather than resorting to self-help. Security agencies have not publicly confirmed the authenticity of the video or announced any arrests at the time of reporting.
