Senate Summons FCT Minister and Police Commissioner Over Aide’s Killing

The Senate has summoned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igwe, following the tragic murder of Chris Agidy, an aide to Senator Ned Nwoko, by kidnappers. The summon was in response to a motion sponsored by Senator Nwoko addressing the kidnapping and killing of his Senior Legislative Aide, Agidy.

The resolution was reached after an extensive debate on Nwoko’s motion, during which the Senate expressed deep concern over the rising cases of kidnapping in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city. The Senate further directed the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to intensify security patrols and surveillance in Abuja and nationwide as a preemptive measure against future kidnappings.

Additionally, the Senate mandated the installation of CCTV cameras in strategic locations within and around Abuja highways. They also called for the allocation of a three-digit emergency number dedicated to prompt emergency response by the police.

Furthermore, the Nigerian Communications Commission was directed to ensure the functionality of dedicated emergency numbers for the police, ambulance service, and fire service to enhance swift response to security and public safety incidents.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized that both the FCT Minister and the Police Commissioner would appear before the Senate in a closed-door session. The purpose of their appearance is to brief the Senate on the measures and strategies being implemented to address the alarming trend of kidnappings, not only in the FCT but across Nigeria.

Akpabio reiterated the urgency of addressing such incidents, stating that the kidnapping and killing of Senator Nwoko’s aide and other residents of the FCT are deeply troubling and must be halted.
