Abia First Lady Condemns Baby Factory, Vows to Protect Vulnerable Girls

By Milcah Tanimu

The discovery of a baby factory in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, has drawn strong condemnation from Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, the wife of the Governor. Speaking in Umuahia, the State capital on Sunday, the First Lady expressed her distress over the exploitation of innocent girls for selfish reasons, particularly as the world prepared to celebrate the 2024 International Women’s Day.

Mrs. Otti emphasized the government’s determination to protect Abia’s girl-child from violence and sexual exploitation. She condemned the existence of baby factories where young girls are exploited, forced into pregnancy, and have their babies taken for profit. The First Lady underscored the dangers posed to the girls’ lives and well-being, including exposure to serious health hazards such as HIV and other STDs.

Addressing the economic challenges and lack of education contributing to vulnerability, Mrs. Otti highlighted the administration’s commitment to skill acquisition programs for vulnerable girls and young women. She assured continuous training until they are gainfully employed, empowered, and resistant to the temptations of giving birth for profit.

The First Lady pledged collaboration with relevant government agencies to hold accountable those fueling the abuse of Abia girls. She emphasized the destructive nature of such activities, emphasizing that it undermines womanhood, culture, and the progress of the generation.

Mrs. Otti commended the Abia State Police Command for their swift response and professionalism in rescuing the girls and arresting suspects. Urging citizens to remain vigilant, she called for the reporting of any suspicious activities to the police or the Gender Based Violence office.

The First Lady concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to building a decent state that positively explores the talents of Abia women. She warned criminals against undermining collective efforts and assured that the government would not tolerate activities that compromise the well-being of its citizens.

The recent discovery in Aba follows previous incidents in the region, with the police acting on intelligence to rescue pregnant girls and shut down similar operations. The First Lady urged citizens to join the government in ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals in the community.
